Ms. Knezha's 5th Grade

Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to send out our first Knezha Kiddos Newsletter of the year! The first week of school has flown by! I plan to send you updates by email as often as necessary, but send out something a little more formal (like this) each week.
Calendar Dates to Remember:Knezha Class
Sept. 12 Open House, iPad, and Camp Meeting
Oct. 6 Creek Week Cleanup--Parent Volunteers will be needed to walk the 2 mile clean up route with us and eat lunch picnic style at Schryver (Pool) Park.
Oct. 12-13 Fifth Grade Camp
Happenings:
Class Meetings:
We have been working on establishing class rules and expectations and on how to work independently or with others. The photo in the beginning of the email is of students working on the marshmallow challenge. Ask them how their group did!
Math:
Chapter 1: Place Value to the Ten Millions and Rounding for Estimation
We should finish this chapter by the end of the upcoming week with a test on Friday. Most math practice will take place at school. Multiplication and Division Facts through 12's need to be mastered no later than December. These probably were mastered in other grades and just need a touch up.
CKLA (Reading/Writing): Personal Narratives
We are reading "Pegasus for a Summer" as an example personal narrative while the students contract their own. We are focusing on reading for understanding and as an example personal narrative.
Science: Water Cycle
The water cycle is a basic component to understand how resources are all interconnected and is also taught as a lead in for Creek Week. We clean a portion of Fountain Creek as part of our science curriculum and service to the community. More details on that even to follow at a later date.
Exploratories (Specials): Students in Ms. Knezha's class will have a regular four day schedule: Monday/PE, Tuesday/Art, Wednesday/Music, Thursday/Media, Friday/rotates.
Ms. DeLarm and Ms. Embery teach Social Studies and Literature and will update you on those as things build.
iPads
Responsible use of iPads is being taught as part of Digital Citizenship. Successful completion of those activities as well as completion of the paperwork and deposit are necessary before iPads will be sent home. iPads will not go home before Sept. 13.  Open House on Sept. 12 will give parents all of the pertinent information needed. Much of the paperwork has already been sent to you electronically, but explanations of it all will be shared on Sept. 12.
A Note from the Teacher:
Please ensure that your student has the necessary school supplies as soon as possible. Earbuds or Headphones are needed at school everyday and should be labeled with your student's name. Donations of extra classroom earbuds are greatly appreciated. Earbuds may be obtained inexpensively from many sources including Dollar Tree.
Email is the best way to contact me. I check email before school and throughout the school day and will return your email as soon as possible. Urgent messages such as changes to end of day routines should be left at the front office to be hand delivered to your student. Please email me with any questions (or compliments!) you may have!

Looking forward to a great year!
