Ms. Embery's 5th Grade

11/13/17 THE EMBERY EXPRESS

Effective today, the weekly newsletter will be found on Canvas! If you have older siblings, you are familiar with Canvas. If this is your first adventure, welcome! In fifth grade we will primarily use Canvas to post announcements, as a homework planner tool for the kiddos, and a location for any worksheets, etc....the kids need. Canvas is very important to the students (and you as parents) because both MSMS and MSHS use Canvas. The goal with fifth grade using Canvas is to have the kids fluent in the basic uses of the system so that the transition to MSMS is a bit easier. Please note that while student grades are posted on Canvas for MSMS and MSHS, they will never be posted for elementary school.

For example if you look on the assignments page you will see a copy of the movie permission slip! The calendar will slowly begin to get implemented with daily work in class and any announcements. Canvas is truly a valuable tool for both the students and parents. Please try to get used to it!

AMAZING JOB!:

I was sent numerous videos and pictures from our Veteran's Day assembly last Friday. The kids did an amazing job and many tears were shed by all. If you or your family member is/was a veteran please know how much the service is appreciated! My favorite veteran is my 97 year old grandfather who is a WW2 Naval Veteran.

COMING UP:

The poetry reading will occur at some point before winter break. It will NOT occur this Friday.

This Friday we will be going to see the movie Wonder. Students who have not turned in their permission slip and $7 need to do so by Wednesday!

Next week is Thanksgiving break! Please enjoy the time with your kiddos. I can't believe the holiday season is here. Jack and I decided to go ahead and get the tree up yesterday! No decorations on it yet, but it does add a wonderful glow and warmth to the early darkness of the day. I hope you all enjoy the week off!

MATH:

We are beginning Chapter 4 today which covers multiplication and division of fractions!

CKLA:

We continue to read, write, and understand a variety of poetry schemes. In The House on Mango Street we are focusing on dialogue and setting!

Have a wonderful week and fabulous Thanksgiving!
