D14 Announces New Policy on Pets at School
Posted on 02/19/2019
no petsAfter the dog incident across the street from MSES last Wednesday, district administrators reviewed our policy about animals on campus, and Supt. Longfield announced the following district-wide policy:

Animals on District 14 Property:
Due the unpredictable nature of animals, MSSD 14 is not allowing animals (pets) on its property during the school day or at school activities. The definition of the school day is before school (during student drop off), during the school day, and after school (during school pick up). Additionally, we are not allowing animals on school property at school events (examples of school events are: sporting competitions, musical/dance/instrumental performances, school-wide events such as parent/teacher conferences and open house). Service animals are permitted.
District 14 Administration

Certainly, Colorado is a dog-loving state--and Manitou Springs is no exception! We must, however, take the incident Wednesday as fair warning of what can go wrong when even good dogs are caught in a crowded, stressful situation with lots of kids and other dogs around.

I would personally request that we also work together to ensure dogs are not on the heavy-traffic public sidewalks across from the school, as well.If you have a question regarding this policy, please feel free to contact me for clarification. – Russ Vogel, Principal
