MSES Team Wins First

MSES Team Wins First in Statewide Stock Market Game!
Posted on 05/13/2018
On May, 7th, three mathematically minded 5th-Graders ventured up to the Charles Schwab complex in Denver for a special awards ceremony honoring their participation in the Spring Stockmarket Game Competition. As part of their math learning goals, Adam Krych, Eddie Buckley, and Brenner Gauvin worked with Ms. Kanaga to learn more about the stock market through lessons on types of holdings (mutual funds, stocks, and bonds) and ways to research whether a company is growing or losing money. In February, they kicked off the Stockmarket Game with a virtual portfolio of $100,000 cash that they were to invest in various holdings to try make the most gains between February and April. Although the boys only ended up investing 60% of their portfolio money, their overall returns were double the market average. They closed the competition with over a 7% return rate on their investments! Due to successful decision-making on what investments to make and when to buy and sell, Krych, Buckley, and Gauvin were awarded First Place in the statewide Spring Stockmarket Game Competition. Way to go, gentleman! (Rumor has it the boys will be called summarily down to the office next week…to consult with Mr. Vogel about his portfolio.)
