DeskplaygroundAs you know, we have been working over the past year and more to remodel the MSES playground after our fabulous, but decades-old, wooden structure aged beyond our ability to safely sustain it. We developed a playground-wide plan that included community-build play structures from Concrete Couch and larger commercial equipment for imaginative play, as well as resurfacing the pea-gravel soccer/football field with artificial turf. Unfortunately, even as we’ve completed installation of commercial pieces – our popular “Little Manitou” play structure and the monkey bars -- we’ve run into some obstacles causing us to need to reboot our plans: our insurance company declined to underwrite any play structures that are “home built” and our buildings and grounds director has left the district. One positive development is that we are now empowered by the district to explore more grant funding for the park than during the previous cycle: We are working with MSES parent Anais Spitzer, a professional in the realm of strategy, management, and fundraising for capital projects, to explore more funding options. As we move forward, we will be melding our original plan (still planning to create an initially slated Concrete Couch Art Structure and install the turf) with future possibilities in the new funding and vision process. We will include parent, staff, and student input as we move forward. Stay tuned as we continue to dream up fun, imaginative, and safe options for our children’s playground experience.
