Mrs. DeLarm's 5th Grade

February is a very busy month for us! Please look over the calendar, and let us know if you have any questions.

Families:
This week we finished working on the novel "Don Quixote". We are ending the unit with a bigger writing, and some shorter unit tests. In Math, we started our ratio unit. In Social Studies we finished our unit on England's rulers, and so had our 2nd "Risk Day". In Novels, the students are reading the novel "Fish in a Tree". In Science, they are working on engineering models.

Testing: We will be giving the school benchmark Aspire tests next week 10:30-11:30: Tues, Wed, Thur (also a 1:15-2:15 test on Thursday). Please try to have your child in school. They test much better with the whole class, than in a make-up session.

Science Fair: All 5th graders will participate in Science Fair this year. Mrs. Knezha give A LOT of instruction and examples through her science rotation. A packet is coming home today, the most important part being the due date list! Please help your child stay on top of this big project.

Middle School: Each of our 5th grade classes will be spending a day "shadowing" a 6th grade student at the middle school. This really helps to alleviate some of the student fears about their new school next year (lockers, passing time, lunch, teachers). There is also a parent meeting next week that we encourage you all to attend (even if you have older children and have already "been through it").

Playground: There have been a lot of discussions this year about needing to change/upgrade our playground. Our 5th grade students have played a big part in some of the designs. There are 2 dates in the calendar below for you as families to come and learn more. We encourage you to come.

Valentine's: I will send an email/party form soon to get our food set up for the classroom Valentine's Party. Our class list is below the calendar in this email. If you choose to bring in valentine's, please bring them for the whole class, not just a few friends.

Fieldtrips: Please keep watch for the fieldtrip notices coming home. We will need those back as soon as possible.

Ipads: Your child may be getting a notice to install an update on their iPad. We did get the go-ahead to do this, and it will be much faster at home, so have your child do it this week-end. If they get a question about iCloud drive, they should click "yes".

Supplies: Students are responsible for their own pencils and dry erase markers. Many of them need replacements from the beginning of the year. Please check with your child.

Homework: Yes, there is a Homeroom Sheet due every Friday which includes reading minutes, math fact practice, and another activity. Students also need to take an AR quiz for January for the book they are reading at home. Since January is now over, I will email the families of the students who did not complete theirs this month.
