Intervention Services

MSES offers services in both reading and math intervention. The intervention team identifies and assists students who struggle in these areas, offering direct, small group instruction. We use a variety of teaching tools and assessments to meet the individual needs of our students, including the DIBELS Next (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment, SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) and Really Great Reading literacy curricula, and the digital iReady math program. We look forward to working with any students who need an opportunity for a more intensive, individualized approach to learning!

Robin Sokol
Robin Sokol is a literacy interventionist at MSES. She grew up in Maryland, graduating from Towson State University in 1986 with a B.S. in English/Psychology. After graduation, she traveled the country, visiting Manitou Springs; she fell in love with the town and decided to stay! Ms. Sokol worked as a Special Ed. paraprofessional for four years, before deciding to return to school for her teaching degree. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Colorado College in 1994. She taught kindergarten for three years at UPE, then spent several years at home with her children. She returned to teaching in 2007, working as a first grade literacy teacher and, more recently, as a primary interventionist. She loves helping her students become happy, successful readers! In her free time, Ms. Sokol enjoys reading, gardening, listening to her favorite music, and traveling to concerts. She is also very proud of her two children (MSHS graduates!) who are both amazing young adults, making their way in the world!

Steve Smith
I have been teaching at MSES since 1994. I have taught kindergarten, Title 1, 3rd grade and 2nd grade. I am now loving my position as Math Interventionist. I graduated from UCCS with a bachelors in psychology and then a couple of years later went back and got my certificate in elementary education. My daughter and son both graduated from MSHS. They are both currently serving in the the military. I love teaching in Manitou!

Keren Hale
Keren Hale is excited to be part of the Intervention Team at Manitou Springs Elementary School. She retired from classroom teaching in California last May, and moved to Colorado Springs to be near family. In Keren’s free time, she loves to explore “The Springs”, hang out with her husband and two rescue pups, and, of course, read!

Judy Bray
For over 30 years, education has provided me options that have been inspiring(igniting learning), difficult(thinking you have this curriculum down & changed once again), memorable(traveling out of your comfort zone as you step toward the Great Wall of China), but always a life of service to others. In my case, it “takes a village to support a teacher”. My husband, & now two grown children & grandchildren have always been my greatest cheerleaders! I am privileged to be welcomed into the Manitou family.
